Nanos: Paul within Judaism
No person has had more influence in the development of Christianity than Paul. Yes, even more, than “Jesus,” since it is Paul’s material that really provides the doctrinal foundation for most Christian theology. The problem is that Paul wasn’t a Christian. He was a Jew and a trained Pharisee. When we don’t understand Paul in his own context, we are apt to read him through the lens of 1800 years of Christian thinking. In this study of Nanos and Zetterholm’s collection of articles, we will discover that Paul as a Jew held ideas that are completely contradictory to some Christian interpretations of him. If we want to really know what happened in the first century after Yeshua, we need to know Paul as Jewish. And this collection will get us started, for sure!
